Taxaceae
Yew Family
Sprawling evergreen coniferous shrubs that bear pollen and seeds on separate plants, the pollen produced in small male cones, and seeds produced individually in a red fleshy cup-like structure (aril), not in dry woody cones. The native Canada Yew is the only species known from NB.
Leaves consist of flat needles that have a prominent midrib and are alternate and spirally arranged, pointed, twisted at the base to appear two-ranked, dark green on both sides or sometimes yellow-green underneath, and not aromatic when crushed. The base of each needle extends prominently down the twig.
Wood does not have resin canals. Mainly occurs in moist coniferous woods. Poisonous to humans and livestock if consumed.
