Sarraceniaceae
Pitcher Plant Family
Carnivorous, non-woody (herbaceous), perennials of bogs and fens, capturing and drowning insects in rainwater inside hollow curved pitcher-shaped leaves. Leaves all basal, usually with prominent dark red veins; outer side of the pitcher (leaf) with a wing on the side facing the middle of the plant and prolonged into a broad hood on the opposite side; inside surface of the pitcher with stiff downward pointing hairs that keep insects from escaping.
Flowers large, solitary, nodding, each on a long stalk arising from the base of the plant. Each flower radially symmetrical, and producing both pollen and seeds. Sepals 5, broad, separate, spreading. Petals 5, separate, usually dark red (rarely pale yellow), curved inward, falling off soon after flowering. Stamens many, with short stalks. Ovary 1, large, nearly round, located above point of attachment of other flower parts (superior); style forming a large umbrella-shaped body with 5 lobes. Fruit a capsule with many seeds.
