The endangered Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is the only species found in New Brunswick.
Large pinnately compound, alternate leaves; yellow in fall. Edible nuts.
Both male and female flowers present on the same plant. Male flowers in dangling elongated catkins, green, 10 cm when open. Female flowers small, single or in small clusters; at tip of developing shoots. Flower with emerging leaves. Fruit usually falls with the leaves.
