  Witch-hazel Family

Tall deciduous shrub that blooms between September and November. Leaves alternate, simple, asymmetric, with rounded teeth on edges, often with star-shaped hairs on lower surface; stipules deciduous.

Flowers in clusters, on short stalks in leaf axils; each flower radially symmetrical, and producing both pollen and seeds. Petals 4, very slender, long, linear, yellow. Sepals 4, small, triangular, persistent, dull yellowish-brown on their upper side.Stamens 4, opposite and much shorter than the sepals, alternating with scale-like structures that are actually sterile stamens. Carpels 2, fused to form a compound two-chambered ovary that is at least partly located below the point of attachment of the other flower parts (partly inferior); styles 2, short, Fruit a hairy woody capsule that ejects its 2 seeds explosively.
