Non-woody (herbaceous) plants, mostly from bulbs or bulb-like corms with linear leaves that are usually garlic or onion-scented. In New Brunswick, the family includes Allium and Narcissus.
Flowers usually bisexual and symmetrical and arranged in umbels. Petals and sepals alike (tepals). Flowers of some species are modified into bulblets or leaf tufts.

Allium canadense

Native variety: floodplains, fields , rocky riverbanks, rock crevices. Introduced variety: disturbed sites, roadsides.

Flowers 1-1.5 cm in a dense terminal umbel 1.5-3 cm wide. Before flowers open, they are encased in a thin purple or pink-tinted sheath. Native strains (var. sibiricum) have pink flowers and less stems per clump; introduced Garden Chives (var. schoenoprasum) purple flowers. No bulblets. Fruit a 3-ribbed oval capsule.
Linear, rounded, hollow leaves shorter and less stiff than the flowering stem (scape). Non-flowering plants could be confused with some rushes (Juncus), but chives&#8217; leaves are much less stiff and smell like onion or garlic.
