Amaranthaceae

  Amaranth Family

Annuals, herbaceous or woody. Flowers small with 5 or fewer stamens and 1-5 sepals, which may or may not be fused together, attaching below the ovary. Flowers are wind-pollinated. The flowers may be bisexual or unisexual; in species with unisexual flowers, the pollen-bearing and seed-bearing flowers may occur on the same plant or on different plants. Fruit small, dry, and seed-like (an achene or utricule).

Leaves simple and alternate or opposite. Several species have fleshy leaves or stems.

This family includes the species in the formerly distinct Chenopodiaceae family.
